Solar Powered Trash Cans
I was looking on philly.com and there was an article about the solar powered trash compactors that are all over the city. There are 500 of them throughout the city and 185 recycling bins. These have helped immensely with the containment of trash and reduced the litter. The compactors are 200 gallons while the old wire trash cans were only 55 gallons. This has reduced the man power needed to pick up the trash from 33 men, 19 times a week, to 8 men, 5 times a week. The workers who no longer collect the garbage are now collecting the recylcing around the city. Drexel has a couple of these bins around campus and they are very useful, especially the recycling bins that are next to the compactors. I think they do help keep the city cleaner since they hold more trash and are everywhere throughout the city.
